Simple Steps to Stay Healthy This Winter

Dear Friends,
As many of you are already aware, we are seeing a significant increase in flu activity here in Massachusetts and across the country. The good news is that flu prevention is something we know well — and together, we can take thoughtful steps to help you and your loved ones stay healthy and strong throughout these New England winter months.
Please know that our team at Symphony Care Management has reinstituted all enhanced infection prevention precautions for our visits, particularly with clients and family members who may be at higher risk for infection. As was our policy during COVID, our Care Managers sanitize their hands before and after entering a client’s home, community, or facility, wear masks during visits, and maintain distance whenever possible. These measures are part of our ongoing commitment to protecting your health while continuing to provide our full scope of services.
Flu activity remains very high in Massachusetts, and we want to make sure you feel prepared, supported, and cared for during the winter months ahead. Below is a simple checklist that combines practical flu-prevention steps with additional Symphony WholeLife Wellness recommendations.
Winter Flu Protection Checklist
- Get a flu vaccine
If you or your loved one has not yet received a flu shot, it is not too late. Vaccination can reduce the severity of illness and the risk of complications.
Symphony care managers are available to:
- Accompany a client to a flu vaccine appointment
- Help schedule a pharmacy, clinic, or primary care visit
- Coordinate in-home vaccination services when available
- Have a home Flu/COVID test on hand
Early testing helps guide treatment and next steps.
We can assist with:
- Ordering combined flu/COVID home test kits
- Making sure tests are easy to locate and understand
- Reviewing when and how to use them
- Prepare supplies in advance
If a flu test is positive, having supplies ready can reduce stress and avoid urgent trips out of the home.
We can help coordinate:
- Doctor-recommended over-the-counter medications
- Hydration supplies (fluids, electrolytes)
- Fever-management tools (thermometer, cooling strategies)
- Any additional items recommended by your healthcare provider
- Act quickly if symptoms begin
Flu antiviral medications work best when started within 48 hours of symptom onset.
Our team can:
- Communicate with your physician
- Assist with prescription coordination
- Activate your emergency back up plan with additional home care support if needed short term.

WholeLife Wellness:
Supporting Health All Winter Long

Preventing illness is not just about avoiding germs — it’s also about keeping the body and mind strong. We encourage clients, caregivers, and families to focus on these foundational wellness habits, especially during winter months:
- Prioritize good-quality sleep
- Stay well hydrated with adequate fluids
- Keep your body moving, even at home, to maintain muscle strength, balance, and reduce fall risk
- Stay socially connected to reduce isolation and depression
- Engage in intellectually stimulating activities to support cognitive and emotional well-being
Many of our clients are taking advantage of our Wellness consultations with Kristine Callahan, our Wellness Specialist, to put a thoughtful, personalized plan in place for staying well throughout the winter. These consultations focus on building sustainable routines that support physical strength, emotional health, and overall resilience complimenting traditional medical support.
Let us know how we can help. Whether you need assistance with flu vaccination, home testing, wellness planning, or support during illness, our team is here for you.
Warmly,
Joan and the Symphony Care Management Team
